Leonard E. Robinson, our friend, our kindred soul brother, and the SWEEP Standard’s former Chairman, recently passed away on the morning of Monday, March 16, 2026. He departed this world in his sleep by all accounts, but this by no means reduces the pain and heartache suffered at his passing by his loved ones and SWEEP Standard. We all miss him dearly and he left us far too early in life.
Leonard was a kind soul, brilliant like a light in the dark, shining the way to redemption and sustainability for everyone he touched through words and deed, every moment of his waking existence. His voice mail even signified this with a simple but profound message, “Sorry to miss your call but I’m out protecting the environment. Please leave your message and I’ll get back to you.” And he always would return a call, and get engaged in work, and do his best to conserve and protect the environment. Because that was an integral part of his life and his faith in God and humanity.
Leonard’s work in faith-based sustainability was perhaps his most important endeavor in his last years. His award-winning podcast, “Faith and Sustainability Podcast” for the Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta, Georgia, pioneered an aspect of sustainability activism often overlooked in life by focusing on practical actions that align with spiritual values including renewable energy, waste prevention, sustainable agriculture, and recycling. Leonard through his podcast advocated for integrating religious principles with environmental stewardship. That we should emphasize the moral and ethical responsibilities of individuals and communities to care for our earth as guided by faith traditions.
His listeners called his ground-breaking podcast a “spiritual compass for climate justice”, that his guests were not just experts, but “prophets of possibility”. Indeed, Leonard’s interviews were “thoughtful and energizing”, and “full of hope, personal and sacred.” Importantly, the podcast was praised for interfaith depth and bringing a spiritually grounded approach to environmental justice, which is exactly what we would say to describe Leonard.
Bringing people together, infusing them with his infectious enthusiasm, and lifting their spirits towards a common goal of earthly sustainability. Let us all rejoice in Leonard’s accomplishments, built over several decades of environmental service that would take chapters upon chapters to list and describe. There was no one like Leonard E. Robinson, truly a renaissance man in sustainability; and perhaps there never will be again. We love you man! And we miss you so much!
